System Modeled After AMBER Alert Proposed for Missing Adults

November 16, 2007

The Chillicothe Gazette reports that the Ohio state senate has approved legislation to employ similar alerting practices used for AMBER Alerts to help find missing adults.

The legislation was proposed by State Sen. John Carey, and would establish a state-wide system for locating adults including those with Alzheimer’s or other mental impairments. The legislation was passed by a 30-0 measure and has moved on to the state House of Representatives.

The key issue at play is that AMBER Alerts require specific protocol before they are issued, and only a portion of missing child cases result in the activation of an Alert. The state of Ohio would be allocating resources toward missing adults that it currently isn’t providing for all missing children.
